What is NDIS assistive technology?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme NDIS Assistive technology (AT) is basically any piece of equipment that lets you perform a task you wouldn’t otherwise be able to do, or makes it easier and safer for you to perform a task. NDIS assistive technologies can be life-changing for those with disabilities and support you to live a more independent life.
We can provide services under:
- Customised Prosthetics – 0135
When can specialised footwear be funded by NDIS?
When evidence to prove the support is needed for the participant’s disability, such as written referral from a therapist or podiatrist.
Perfect Fit Pedorthics uses this referral to assess the individual needs and provides evidence to show how the specialised footwear or orthotics will assist in daily living. To support an application, we will submit a report which includes:
- the need for orthopaedic supports to be directly related to the disability
- a recommendation on footwear options to support current and future needs
- determining that supports are reasonable and necessary
- evidence that the supports will help the participant to be substantially more independent
- reducing the need for other kinds of supports, and be of long-term benefit
To access NDIS funding for footwear or footwear modifications, individuals must undergo an assessment by a healthcare professional, such as a podiatrist, who can provide evidence of the person’s functional limitations and the need for specialized footwear or modifications. The assessment report is then submitted to the NDIS for review, and if approved, funding can be allocated to cover the costs.
Did you know……?
Medical Device:
- The World Health Organization (WHO), includes therapeutic footwear as “Assistive products for persons with disability” supported by NDIS.
- In Australia, the Certified Pedorthists develops the medical device prescription based on the referral received from the medical practitioners.
- If the need for specialized footwear is a direct result of a health issues, it is regarded as additional living cost that is solely and directly as a result of the disability or health issue needs.
- Pedorthic medical grade footwear intervention will reduce or avoid the long-term cost of other supports such as additional care or hospitalization due to falls risk.
No Barriers:
- Persons with disability often do not choose appropriate footwear for themselves - there is a tendency for ill-fitted footwear to go unnoticed.
- rarely get ‘‘sized’’ for shoes that fit. Furthermore, retail stores often do not stock the customized shoes needed for these customers.
- The use of inappropriate footwear may be related to socioeconomic factors.
- With the Australian government’s NDIS service, such socioeconomic constraints are no longer an issue and appropriate footwear should be considered a priority.
Obtaining footwear from an appropriately trained professional is recommended. What’s on your feet matters!
