Pedorthic Footwear – Minimum Standards
Indoor and Outdoor Footwear with increased depth to accommodate orthoses or foot deformities. Specifically designed to reduce falls risk by improving balance, stability, and traction.
Wearing appropriate indoor footwear helps prevent walking in socks or barefoot, which significantly increases the risk of falls.
STANDARDS:
- 1Extra Volume Depth:Footwear must incorporate a minimum of 6 millimetres (mm) of additional depth across the entire plantar surface of the last.
- 2Toe Box: Deep / Wide to provide adequate space for the forefoot, including the digits (toes) and metatarsophalangeal joints (ball of the foot).
- 3Heel Counter:Reinforced with a suitable stiffening material that can maintain its shape under load to ensure that it is effective in providing rear foot stability.
- 4Closure System:Fastening systems should be adjustable to provide a secure fit. Footwear without fastenings is not acceptable in this category.
- 5Midsole Stability:The midsole must be made of stable material to provide stability.
- 6Durability:The footwear should be durable enough to withstand the rigours of daily use, with an expected usage of approximately 12 months (excluding wear and tear).
- 7Sandals and Open-Toed Footwear:Must meet all the requirements stated above, except for the toe reinforcement material in the toe box. They must have a closed-in heel and the closure system must be secure. Slip-on and non-adjustable fastening systems are unacceptable in this category.
